Our Research Mission
The Spiral Foundation is dedicated
to expanding the body of research on sensory processing. The Spiral
Research Center and Sensory Processing Laboratory is located at
Occupational Therapy Associates - Watertown, a name synonymous with
excellence in health care, research and human service delivery since
1983. The Spiral Research Center and Laboratory is headed by Teresa
A. May-Benson, Sc.D., OTR/L, a well-known expert in sensory
integration in occupational therapy and known clinically for her
work with children and adults with sensory processing problems.
The Spiral
Research Center is dedicated to increasing knowledge of sensory
processing and its effect on children and adults through
increasing knowledge of sensory processing and its effects on
children and adults with a variety of diagnoses and disorders
through high quality research efforts in core content areas include
praxis, vestibular functioning in humans and primates, motor
control, physiological responses to sensation, sensory associations
with trauma and attachment difficulties, and birth and developmental
factors related to SPD. We strive to
improve awareness of sensory dysfunction and how it impacts daily
life.
The Spiral Foundation
Research Center focuses on forging relationships with universities
and institutions, national leaders in sensory processing and other
research facilities to promote multi-disciplinary partnerships.
Updates on research and its translation to practice are disseminated
via presentations, conferences, the SPIRAL Foundation web site,
newsletters and peer-reviewed publications. We collaborate with
nationally known researchers, such as Dr. Lucy Jane Miller of the
SPD Foundation and Colorado Children's Hospital, Dr. Paul Dizio of
Brandeis University, Dr. Margaret Bauman of LADDERS and other
research facilities, including Thomas Jefferson University,
Pediatric Therapy Network of Torrance, CA, and the University of
Southern California. Our research is
approved by the Spiral Foundation Institutional Review Board, which
ensures the ethical and humane treatment of persons enrolled in
research.
The Spiral Foundation, through
OTA-Watertown, has conducted the following research studies
examining aspects of sensory processing in individuals with
identified sensory processing disorder. Together over 30 studies
have been completed and many more are underway.
-
Coping Skills in Children with Sensory Integrative Dysfunction
-
Sensory Processing in Children with ADD
-

-

Factors Related to Sensory Integrative Dysfunction
In addition to
conducting cutting edge research in the area of sensory processing,
the Spiral Foundation is committed to providing the public with
current information on sensory integration-related research. This
section of our website includes information and resources on our
research that we hope you will find useful.
