Five conversations exploring the fascinating journey of sensory integration (SI) across the
lifespan. Moderated by Robyn Carreras, this series features insights
from SPIRAL faculty and esteemed guest speakers.
Through discussion and engaging case
studies, we delve into the unique sensory experiences and support
needs faced by individuals at different stages of life (early childhood, elementary school year, teenage years, adulthood and old age).
Gain valuable
knowledge and practical strategies for supporting sensory integration
from early childhood to old age.
Five conversations
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this series participants will be able to:
- Describe the foundational principles of sensory integration across different stages of the lifespan.
- Identify common sensory processing challenges and variations experienced by individuals from early childhood to old age.
- Define effective strategies and interventions for supporting sensory integration in diverse populations across the lifespan.
Early Childhood (0-5 years)
Leorah Bernstein, MS, OTR/L
An insightful discussion
focused on nurturing sensory development in early childhood. Leorah and Robyn touch upon key milestones of sensory development in
infancy and early childhood, and explore various intervention
strategies aimed at supporting SI in young children.
Through the analysis of a selected case study, they examine
intervention ideas and techniques. The
essential role caregivers play in promoting sensory development and
facilitating holistic growth during this pivotal developmental stage is highlighted.
Elementary School Years (Ages 6-12)
Michelle Denison-Darragh, MS, OTR/L
An enlightening talk highlighting how typical sensory and motor milestones, for children aged
6-12, influence their ability to
engage and succeed in school and daily activities. We
explore variations in sensory processing among children and discuss
effective intervention strategies for promoting sensory-friendly
practices within educational settings. Practical approaches to supporting sensory development are discussed,
emphasizing the crucial role of educators and caregivers in fostering a
supportive environment. Ways to create
sensory-friendly classrooms, implement sensory breaks, and utilize tools
like noise-canceling headphones and fidget toys to aid children with
sensory processing difficulties are highlighted.
This discussion aims to equip parents,
teachers, and therapists with the knowledge and tools needed to support SI during the elementary school years.
Teenage Years (Ages 13-19):
Adulthood (Ages 20+):
Teresa May-Benson, ScD, OTR/L, FAOTA
This talk delves into how sensory processing impacts adults’ daily lives, from work and social relationships to personal well-being. We explore the unique sensory challenges that adults may face and how to adapt therapeutic approaches that are typically play-based for adult intervention.
Through case studies, we provide practical examples of supporting sensory integration in adults, focusing on individualized strategies for managing sensory needs in various environments. Whether you’re a therapist, caregiver, or simply interested in understanding how sensory processing influences adulthood, this session offers valuable takeaways. Don’t miss this chance to deepen your understanding of sensory integration during this important life stage
Old Age (Ages 65+):
Mary Beth Kadlec, OT, ScD, OTR
Join us for an insightful discussion on sensory integration in older
adulthood. This talk will explore the sensory changes that commonly
occur as we age and their impact on daily life, including mobility,
social engagement, and overall quality of life. Using a case study, we
will examine individualized strategies to promote sensory engagement and
enhance well-being in older adults, focusing on practical approaches to
support independence and meaningful participation in everyday
activities. This talk is
designed to provide valuable insights for therapists, caregivers, and
anyone interested in supporting older adults during this significant
stage of life.
